Our residential Home Energy Assessment Program will help you make confident, informed, and educated decisions about home electrification, heat pumps, and alternate heating options. AHS currently offers live assessments in Juneau and Sitka and a mix of in-person and virtual assessments in the Accelerating Clean Energy Savings (ACES) program region. For communities outside of the ACES program region, AHS offers virtual assessments for a fee of $125. Please note that our energy assessments are not energy audits. AHS energy assessments will provide an informative and helpful home energy consultation intended to provide you with a deeper understanding of your home and its energy needs.
Through the energy assessment process, Alaska Heat Smart will:
- Provide a detailed report outlining options about what heat pump systems will work best in your home with your existing heating infrastructure.
- Help you determine if your home has any existing issues that should be dealt with prior to adding a heat pump. These could include electrical panel needs, electrical service needs, or varied energy efficiency concerns.
- Help identify potential home energy improvements, including options for domestic hot water production, as well as heating of lesser used spaces, and heat pump heating of your home’s primary living spaces.
- Help you identify available financing options, from cash incentives, to traditional loans, and federal tax credits.
- Provide analysis of contractor quotes.

Please note that your past energy usage data is important to accurately analyze your home’s heating needs and its potential for cost savings. With your permission, Alaska Heat Smart can obtain your home’s past electricity use data directly from your utility in some communities. In some cases, you will be asked to obtain your past electricity use data and send it to us.
For all other forms of energy (oil, wood, pellets, propane, etc.), we will need you to collect three years (if possible) of your home’s fuel usage (how many units of fuel, fuel type, dates) before we can run any calculations. If this information is not available for some reason, we can still perform an assessment for you, but our conclusions will be less accurate and a bit more general. Click here for information on contacting your heating oil supplier.
See below for a list of information we will request for your home energy assessment:
- Floor plan of your home (can be a rough sketch)
- Last three years (if possible) of oil and/or propane usage – dates delivered and gallons delivered (if applicable)
- Estimated # of cords of wood used each year (if applicable)
- Estimated # of 40lb bags of pellets used each year (if applicable)
- Last three years of natural gas usage – CCF (if applicable)
